Strange Clocks

Prague Orloj

The sky since 1410

How to read it

  1. The outer ring is the 24-hour day; the golden hand points to the current hour.

  2. The zodiac ring maps the ecliptic in 12 signs.

  3. The gold disc is the Sun; the silver one, the Moon with its real phase.

  4. When both discs line up on the same side: new moon. On opposite sides: full moon.

The story

Prague's astronomical clock has shown the Sun and Moon travelling the zodiac since 1410 — the oldest one still running. This dial computes today's real positions on the ecliptic.

Fun fact

Legend says the city blinded Master Hanuš so he could never build another — grim, and almost certainly false (he didn't even build it).
