Strange Clocks

Fibonacci Clock

The golden ratio tells time

How to read it

  1. The squares are worth 1, 1, 2, 3 and 5, from smallest to largest.

  2. Add the red and blue squares to get the hour (12h).

  3. Add the green and blue squares and multiply by 5: those are the minutes, rounded down to 5.

  4. Several combinations can show the same time — that's part of the charm.

The story

Invented in 2015 by Canadian engineer Philippe Chrétien in Montreal, this clock was funded on Kickstarter and turns the famous 1-1-2-3-5 sequence into a puzzle you solve every five minutes.

Fun fact

The same time often has several valid combinations; this app picks one deterministically so the app and widget always match.
